Re-registered and Deregistered Vehicles (SKAT Updates)

Every week, the Danish tax authorities (SKAT) send a report to Connected Cars showing which vehicles have been changed or taken off the road.

We check this report to protect user data and make sure that only the true owner of a vehicle can see its location and information.

Deregistered Vehicles (Cars taken off the road)

If the SKAT report shows a vehicle has been completely deregistered or scrapped, our system turns off the connection automatically. The driver is removed from the vehicle profile and gets a notification explaining why.

Re-registered Vehicles (Changes to a car's paperwork)

When a vehicle is re-registered, Connected Cars support reviews it manually. If the same user is still attached to the car after the registration date changed, we turn off the connection temporarily. We then send the user the following message to check that they still own the car:

The Message We Send to Users:

Dear X,

We have been notified by the Danish tax authorities (SKAT) that a change has been made to the registration of your vehicle, [License Plate]. This could be because of a change in your insurance company, a re-registration, or a temporary pause in registration. Because of this, your data connection to the vehicle has been turned off.

To turn the connection back on, we need you to prove that you still own the vehicle. This is required by data protection laws (GDPR).

You can do this by sending us one of the following:
- A photo of Part 1 of your physical registration certificate. A screenshot from your personal login page at skat.dk.
- A clear photo of the mileage on your car's dashboard odometer.

Please send this information to hello@connectedcars.dk. If you do not send this proof, the connection will stay turned off.

Best regards,
Connected Cars

Why do we do this?

The report from SKAT only tells us that something changed on the car's paperwork. It does not tell us exactly what changed, so we cannot see if the car was sold to a new owner or if the current owner just switched insurance companies.

To keep everyone's private data safe, we turn off the connection and ask for quick proof of ownership just in case the car has changed hands.
